The course addresses tropical forest structure and diversity, forest degradation, planted forests, agroforestry, land-use change, carbon storage, and conservation policy dimensions of tropical forest management through readings, case studies, and discussion.

Topics include forest inventory and mensuration, watershed processes, disturbance, invasive species, site preparation, natural regeneration, monitoring, adaptive management, and restoration planning, with students applying these concepts through field exercises and development of a restoration plan.

An introduction to forestry and forest management, covering tree structure and function, forest ecology, silviculture, forest measurement, forest products, resource management, and forest policy. The course combines classroom instruction with field and laboratory work in tree identification, forest succession, soils, navigation, forest measurement, and professional forestry practices.

A senior capstone centered on developing a forest management plan for the University’s Domain; Compartment 6, a roughly 163-acre mixed-hardwood forest.The project combined forest inventory, stand assessment, silvicultural planning, and economic analysis to develop practical management recommendations.

An applied study of wood as a biological and renewable material, linking tree growth and silvics to wood anatomy, material properties, and end use. Students develop skills in gross and microscopic wood identification while examining how anatomical structure influences strength, durability, defects, and product performance across lumber, panels, pulp and paper, and engineered wood products.

A one-credit intensive course focused on practical forest measurement and inventory methods for forest management. Students applied field-based mensuration techniques to collect, summarize, and interpret stand-level forest data.
