As part of the SILS 2025 Conference, participants are invited to join a special field trip to Porto Flavia, a unique and historic mining facility carved directly into the dramatic cliffs of Sardinia’s southwestern coast.
Constructed in the 1920s, Porto Flavia revolutionized ore transportation in the region. The structure includes two tunnels carved into the rock, vertically connected by nine enormous silos capable of storing up to 10,000 tons of ore. Materials from nearby mines were unloaded into the upper tunnel, stored in silos, and then transferred directly onto ships via a lower tunnel conveyor belt, dramatically improving transport efficiency.
The facility operated until the 1960s and today remains a remarkable example of industrial archaeology, combining engineering innovation with stunning coastal scenery.
