On March 12-13th, we had our first neighborhood battery collection and recycling event. We went door-to-door in our neighborhood, pitched the TAE-1MB campaign, and collected 712 batteries!
Many people had been keeping used batteries at home for the past year and were very enthusiastic that we came.
Planning 2 days for the neighborhood event worked out well for us. First day to walk around and talk to neighbors to raise awareness and collect batteries; leave a flyer if no one is at home. Then come back the second day for the remaining pickup. This made it easier to transport the batteries in 2 batches -- they can get really heavy!
We also learned that many neighbors have other e-waste that could use help to recycle such as printer cartridges and compact fluorescent bulbs.

Preparation Checklist
Prepare a collection bag with TAE logo and a TAE-1MB flyer
Send a notification to the neighborhood mailing list or social media group
Prepare a short "elevator" pitch about the TAE-1MB campaign, to get to the key points in <1minute
Confirm with a local recycling center or a local business accepting used household batteries for recycling, and plan to drop off batteries on the same day
Bring protective gloves and packing tape for safe handling of used batteries
When collecting in your neighborhood, it is important to respect some neighbors' preference for privacy and no-solicitation signs. In this case, instead of knocking on the door, we leave a TAE-1MB flyer with links and contact information.

In the months of March and April 2022, we reached out to Redwood Villa Senior Apartment. May from the management team was very supportive. Together we organized battery collection and helped recycle over 200 batteries.
During summer 2022, we established collaboration with Dee at the Warburton Place Senior Residence for battery recycling.
Dedicated battery recycle bins are placed at each senior residence to continue collection!
