SIKIMYII?

The Roar of A Survivor

Sikimyii is a Swahili word that means "I will not be silenced!" These are the words that my close friend told me after a man raped her and she refused to shut up because she knew that silence is the what keeps sexual violence and rape culture moving. Thus, Sikimyii is the Roar of a Survivor. We began this in 2018. Our work is eradicating sexual violence and rape culture by creating awareness and connecting victims to rape trauma agencies so they can transition from victim to survivor. And now we are re-launching it with all that we got.

WHAT WE HAVE DONE

I (Wambui Ochieng') began Sikimyii in 2018 after years of planning and procrastinating. In 2018, my close friend was raped, an experience we and so many friends shared. I had always planned to start an initiative to combat sexual violence and rape culture. When she sent me a text one morning from school telling me I felt pain. She was so brave in such a state of trauma. She didn't sit still. No. My friend told me, the reason why rape culture continues is because victims remain silent, "Wambui, I will not be silent". That was a roar! To me she was a warrior and I realized it was time to answer the call. So as we were going to court, I began Sikimyii. I didn't have any experience in doing this. But some months back I had attended the Faith in The Commonwealth Training of Trainers Conference where I was taught how to engage people in community dialogue and community action. I called on a few individuals to help me with this cause.

OPEN FORUM DISCUSSIONS

We began by inviting people to open discussion forums.

ANTI-RAPE PROTESTS

We organized the first protest against Rape Culture in our university.

CONNECTING VICTIMS TO POST RAPE CARE AGENCIES

We began to bring in Post rape care agencies to help us understand the broader context of handling rape cases.

INSTITUTIONAL FACILITATION

We ventured out of Moi University and began to take the discussions to the schools around our area, Kesses.

SPREADING LOVE

We continue to spread positivity in dealing with children so they do not remain silent when they are in danger or violated.

ONLINE ACTIVATION

We ventured into the online Arena and continued to create awareness through our Facebook page.
