We are excited to announce the researchers who will give invited presentations at SignFest! You can learn more about them below:
Dr. Hannah Dostal is a professor of literacy education at the University of Connecticut. Her research primarily focuses on writing instruction for deaf students and teacher professional development in literacy. She will give a presentation from 10- 11 am titled:
"Write On! Instruction for Writing Development".
This presentation is co-authored by Dr. Leala Holcomb, a researcher at the University of Tennessee investigating language and literacy development. Leala is specifically interested in exploring deaf-centered ways of teaching and learning.
Dr. Jenny Singleton’s sign language-focused research sits at the intersection of psychology, linguistics, and education. She aims to understand how language modality and socialization practices contribute to children’s language acquisition, especially among diverse learners or within diverse learning contexts such as classrooms. She will give a presentation from 11am - 12 pm titled: "How case studies of atypical sign acquisition can inform our broader understanding of language, cognition, modality, and neurodiversity"
Dr. Annemarie Kocab is a postdoctoral fellow in the Departments of Psychology and Linguistics at Harvard University. Her research seeks to understand what properties of the human mind give rise to language and how the structure of language reflects the structure of the mind.
Unfortunately, Annemarie Kocab is unable to attend, so we will host a discussion of future events from 4-5 pm instead
