Understanding how students learn can help guide effective mathematics teaching. This free online session, presented by mathematics teaching expert Anna Stokke, connects research with practice, focusing on working-memory limits and the instructional hierarchy, which helps explain how math skills develop through predictable stages. We will discuss why fluency with foundational math topics matters for learning more complex math and what evidence-based mathematics instruction looks like in practice. Participants will leave with a clear, research-backed framework for what effective math teaching involves, and why it matters. 

Anna Stokke is a mathematics professor at the University of Winnipeg and an Adjunct Professor in the School of Education at La Trobe University. She holds a PhD in mathematics and is a recipient of a 3M National Teaching Fellowship, Canada’s highest award for post-secondary teaching excellence and educational leadership. She hosts the Chalk & Talk podcast, where she interviews leading education experts on evidence-informed mathematics teaching and education policy. Her mathematics education work focusses on translating research into actionable recommendations for educators and policymakers.
