To the casual observer, a derelict industrial site or a vacant urban lot is a scar on the landscape—a bleak "eyesore" of cracked concrete, rusting skeletons, and unruly weeds. We are conditioned to view these spaces as dead zones, dormant voids awaiting the arrival of a bulldozer to bring back "productive" use. Yet, if you look past the chain-link fences, a much stranger and more vibrant reality emerges. These disturbed landscapes, often written off as ecological deserts, are frequently the most biodiverse patches of land in our modern world. How is it that ground once choked by heavy industry can now be more alive than the rolling green hills of the countryside?
Nestled in the Thames Estuary lies an unlikely crown jewel of British conservation: a defunct oil refinery on Canvey Island. For decades, the site was a labyrinth of industrial infrastructure and modified ground, far removed from any traditional definition of "nature." However, in a move that seems entirely counter-intuitive, this abandoned relic was declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The refinery’s transformation is a masterclass in ecological resilience. While the air might once have smelled of crude oil and heavy machinery, the site has become a sanctuary for an extraordinary richness of insect species. Because it escaped both the plough of intensive agriculture and the sprawl of residential development, it allowed a complex, undisturbed ecosystem of invertebrates to take hold. There is a profound, poetic irony in the fact that a location once dedicated to the processing of fossil fuels has emerged as one of the nation's most significant refuges for rare terrestrial insects.
Our cultural bias leads us to believe that only "pristine" environments—the deep shade of an ancient woodland or the stillness of a primary forest—hold high ecological value. Data from the field, however, tells a different story. The "legacy of past industrial use" often leaves behind thin, "skeletal" soils with highly variable chemical contents and shifting pH levels.To a botanist, these harsh, nutrient-poor conditions are a gift. In high-nitrogen agricultural land, a few "bully" species—fast-growing grasses and common weeds—quickly take over and outcompete everything else. But in the stressed, skeletal soils of a brownfield, these dominant plants struggle to survive. This creates a niche for rare specialists, mosses, lichens, and flower-rich grasslands to thrive in a delicate, species-dense mosaic. As the Phase 1 Habitat Survey guidelines note:
"Despite their modified nature, the best examples can be remarkably rich in species, sometimes supporting as many invertebrates as ancient woodland."
The term "brownfield" often conjures images of apocalyptic ruins, but the technical definition used by ecologists is surprisingly broad. In the Phase 1 Habitat Survey—the standard industry method for auditing the UK’s natural habitats—land is categorised by its use and vegetation rather than its aesthetic appeal.
This leads to a revelation that often shocks local residents: the neatly mown lawns of your local park or playing field are technically "disturbed land." Specifically, "Amenity grassland" falls under the same broad umbrella as derelict quarries. Take, for example, The Byes in Sidmouth—a popular riverside walk and parkland. Because its expansive green spaces are maintained as manicured amenity grass, it qualifies under this technical classification. This shifts our understanding of "disturbed land" from a negative value judgment to a technical descriptor for any landscape regularly managed or modified by human hands.
The history of urban ecology is inextricably linked to the history of urban destruction. Following the Second World War, the charred remains of bomb sites became unintended laboratories for the natural world. These ruins were famously colonised by the Black Redstart, a bird that found a perfect mimicry of its natural mountain haunts in the crags and crevices of bombed-out buildings.
Ecologists refer to the first wave of life in these areas as "Ephemeral/short perennial" vegetation. These are nature’s first responders—short, patchy plant associations that one might typically find in the ballast of a railway or the floor of a quarry. They represent the first heartbeat of a landscape’s recovery, turning a site of tragedy into a functioning, thriving habitat.
While we often focus on fenced-off plots of land, much of our most valuable habitat exists as "green veins" running through our cities. Our transport infrastructure—the embankments of railways (both used and disused), the banks of canals, and the often-ignored road verges—provides relatively undisturbed corridors in a heavily modified world.
These marginal spaces are the vital arteries of the landscape. Where railway cuttings and embankments are wide enough, they act as uncut ribbons of grassland, scrub, or even woodland. Narrow, herb-rich verges provide essential pockets of floral diversity that would otherwise be lost to development. These corridors allow species to move and migrate through urban and agricultural "deserts" that would otherwise be impassable, maintaining the genetic connectivity of our wild populations.
The ecological value of disturbed land proves that nature is not a static museum piece; it is a dynamic force capable of reclaiming the most hostile environments. These sites are constantly in flux. At the Lockyer Observatory site in Sidmouth, for instance, we can observe this transition in real-time as the land gradually restores itself into a rare heath habitat.
As our world becomes increasingly urbanised, we are forced to reconsider what we mean by "waste." If a derelict refinery can support as much life as a centuries-old forest, and a neighbourhood park is a technical cousin to a post-war ruin, how should we value the "disturbed" ground beneath our feet? In an era of mass habitat loss, perhaps it is time to stop seeing these sites as eyesores and start seeing them for what they truly are: the unexpected refuges of the future. After all, if life can thrive in the skeletal soil of an oil refinery, where can't it go?
