Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a multimedia work that combines video, sound, images, and light. The work evolved into an abstraction formed from an interplay between a multitude of colors, forms, textures, and movements. The movements and the transformations are inspired by the cycle of nature that change, gather, transfigure, and disintegrate into smaller clusters and gradually fade until they disappear.

The work is composed as a circle with layers of images abstracted from hundreds of photographs and digital drawings of various scenes and objects from daily life and imagination. These textures are transformed into fragments that gather and spin like planets floating in the universe. They overlap and dissolve, producing an effusion of colorful particles that drift across the space—a spectacle that engrosses our mind, reinforced by its aesthetic. 

The gradual changes of movement throughout the video signify the natural process of evolution which require an immense amount of time to adapt, in the same way we adapt to our social environment. This evolutionary process, in turn, is beautiful, fitting the needs of our transformation according to the time, context, and society in which we live. While at times it is also uncertain, which can leave us with a sense of sadness and remorse. 

Things cannot last forever, they get old and they change. Time and evolution are inevitable. Mindfulness is a work that imagines life’s evolutionary experiences as pieces of color and texture. It allows the viewers to overcome realistic visuals and lead them to shadows of imagination and discover personal experiences within the work.

The Mindfulness installation is a series of lightboxes rooted in the artist’s personal experiences that left behind many scars. The artist transformed images into a variety of shapes and colors to process and soothe these memories. Visitors are invited to explore the work, to be bathed in the calming light while soothing their own life experiences.
