AI for Weather Forecasting and Nowcasting 2026
10 November 2026
Utrecht University, Utrecht, The Netherlands
Recent advances in machine learning are creating new opportunities for weather forecasting and nowcasting, from short-term precipitation prediction to large-scale weather models and impact-based forecasting.
This one-day workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners from academia, research institutes, public organizations, and industry to exchange ideas, discuss recent developments, and explore opportunities for future collaboration.
The workshop will be hosted at Utrecht University and is intended to provide an informal and interdisciplinary setting for discussion between experts working on weather prediction, machine learning, hydrology, operational forecasting, and related applications.
The workshop will cover a broad range of topics related to data-driven and physics-informed weather forecasting, including:
Radar-based precipitation nowcasting
Machine learning for weather forecasting
Physics-informed machine learning
Foundation models for weather and climate
Data assimilation and hybrid forecasting systems
Uncertainty quantification and probabilistic forecasting
Extreme weather prediction
Applications in Hydrological and impact-based forecasting
Operational deployment of machine-learning forecasting systems
Weather data, benchmarks, and evaluation
Downscaling and correction models
The scope is intentionally broad, and contributions on related topics are very welcome.
The workshop will consist of a combination of invited presentations, short research talks, discussions, and opportunities for networking.
The current plan includes:
Invited talks from academia, research institutes, and industry
Short presentations highlighting ongoing research and operational developments
Panel and open discussion sessions
Opportunities to identify shared research challenges and potential collaborations
Informal networking during coffee breaks and lunch
A detailed program will be announced soon.
The workshop is intended for researchers, practitioners, PhD candidates, and professionals working in areas such as:
Meteorology and weather forecasting
Artificial intelligence and machine learning
Radar and remote sensing
Climate and environmental modelling
Operational forecasting systems
Weather-related decision support
High-performance computing and scientific computing
Participants from universities, research institutes, public organizations, and industry are all welcome.
Researchers and practitioners from organizations including Utrecht University, KNMI, Deltares, HKV, Weather Impact, and other organizations have expressed interest in contributing to the workshop.
Confirmed speakers and the detailed program will be announced as the workshop develops.
Beyond presenting recent research, an important objective of the workshop is to strengthen connections between researchers and practitioners working on weather forecasting and nowcasting.
We hope the workshop will help identify opportunities for:
Joint research projects
Shared datasets and benchmarking activities
Collaboration between academia and operational organizations
New research proposals
Knowledge exchange between meteorology, hydrology, and machine learning communities
Future workshops and community-building activities
