11th Irish SIAM-IMS Student Conference

The SIAM-IMA Dublin Area Student Chapter was delighted  to welcome industrial and applied mathematics students from across Ireland to Dublin on 8th May 2026 for the 11th edition of the Irish SIAM-IMS Student Conference.  This event was an engaging forum for student collaboration and exchange of ideas. It featured a range of events including student talks and poster presentations, keynotes from academic speakers, opportunities for networking (including a conference dinner).

Here is an outline of the days events:

• Welcome by Prof. Turlough Downes (DCU).

• Keynote talks by Prof. Paolo Guasoni (DCU) and Prof. Andrew Parnell (UCD).

• Contributed student talks across four thematic sessions: Applications to finance & engineering, Fluid mechanics I & II, Modelling the natural world.

• Student poster session.

• Prize giving.

• Conference dinner.

Sessions I and III were opened by fascinating talks from our two keynote speakers, who gave great insight into their cutting edge research in highly topical fields.  Prof. Paolo Guasoni (DCU) spoke on "Payment-Channel Networks: Liquidity, Topology, and Resilience", discussing many recent developments in the area of cryptocurrencies and decentralised finance. Prof. Andrew Parnell (UCD) spoke on "The Revolution in AI Weather Forecasting", giving a captivating overview of how AI-based models are being applied to the study of weather and climate. We are incredibly grateful to our two speakers for the time and effort they dedicated to the preparation and delivery of their talks. 

The conferences main feature was the contributed talks from students from across Ireland. In total, nine students presented their own research work across three thematic areas: Applications to Engineering and Finance, Modelling the Natural World, and Fluid Mechanics. Each session featured fantastic oral presentations from Msc and PhD students, who provided well-explained overviews of their respective research projects.  We also featured an insightful poster session, giving students a great opportunity to network and discuss mathematics!

The concludion of proceedings featured the presentation of the Best Speaker award for this year. Following some fierce competition, and a difficult decision process, the organsing commitee were delighted to present the award to Adam Luddy (UCC), for his presentation "Canard-Tipping Cascade in Networks". Congratulations Adam!
