MY WHY
My passion for learning and sharing knowledge is the driving force behind everything I do.
Hi, I'm Shuyi. Welcome to my portfolio! Here, I'm excited to share with you my academic journey, professional experiences, and the ongoing work I'm passionate about.
My path so far has been all about growing and seeing things from new angles. I started out in a small town in southwestern China, experienced the incredible energy of Peking University, and now I'm working on my master’s in applied linguistics at the University of Tokyo. Growing up as a member of the Dai ethnic minority, I was usually in classrooms where my language and culture just weren't represented. That really stuck with me. Now, it's exactly what drives me to build the kind of inclusive learning spaces I always wished I had back then — places where everyone truly feels seen, heard, and valued.
I’ve always seen teaching and learning as two sides of the same coin; you can’t really have one without the other. Through my work as a tutor and teaching assistant, I’ve had the chance to learn alongside students from many different backgrounds. Every experience has reminded me that each interaction is an opportunity for growth. I’m driven by a desire to break down cultural and language barriers and help foster a lifelong love of learning.
My work sits at the crossroads of language education, learning technologies, and teaching innovation, and it’s an area I’m really excited about. Lately, I’ve been exploring how generative AI can support English language learners, not just as helpful resources but as ways to spark deeper engagement. I’m especially interested in digital rhetoric and effective prompt strategies, and in helping learners feel confident using these technologies in meaningful ways.
Looking ahead, I hope to grow into an educator and researcher who can connect research, classroom practice, and policy in meaningful ways. I’m particularly interested in how tools like large language models and data-driven insights can support both learners and teachers across different contexts. Ultimately, I’d love to teach internationally and play a role in shaping education systems that promote equity, celebrate linguistic diversity, and help every student thrive.
ASPIRATION
"Writing is an act of discovery, a way of understanding the world and oneself. It is through the labor of putting thoughts into words that we uncover truth, shape ideas, and connect with others across the boundaries of time and space."
—— Malcolm Cowley
