Dr. Shumin Lin is Professor of TESOL at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and completed a postdoctoral teaching fellowship in Anthropology at the University of South Florida before returning to Taiwan to continue her research and teaching at the intersection of sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and critical applied linguistics. She has also held visiting appointments as a Visiting Scholar in Linguistics at Georgetown University and as a Guest Lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany.

For over two decades, Dr. Shumin Lin has investigated how language shapes social life across the lifespan in the context of Taiwan. Her research centers on three interconnected areas: the sociolinguistics of aging; language socialization across the lifespan; and multilingualism, migration, and identity among transnational migrants. Across these areas, her work explores how language both reflects and shapes social relationships, identities, and inequalities.

Dr. Lin’s research has been supported by numerous competitive grants, including a Fulbright Senior Scholar Research Award, an Academia Sinica fellowship, and multiple grants from Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council.
