Shuichi was developed to be the true main protagonist of Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.
Shuichi's backstory references Shinichi Kudo from Detective Conan/Case Closed, who is also the protagonist and a famous high school detective, and whose parents are a mystery writer and a former movie star living overseas and have a "hands-off" approach to parenting.
His voice actress, Megumi Hayashibara was chosen to have Shuichi's Japanese voice. The main reason why Hayashibara, who rarely voices male characters, was chosen for voicing Shuichi is because she has a deep and vast experience connected to detective characters. Hayashibara helped the Danganronpa team on making Shuichi have more background story to make him more detective-like.
His first name kanji, (終一) shūichi, means "last one" while his last name kanji, 最原 Saihara, could mean "prime field" or "conspicuous wilderness".
Shuichi's first name foreshadows his role in the story, as it means "end one" and he was the one who ended the Danganronpa series. His full name, Saihara Shūichi, can also be shortened to Saishū, the Japanese name of the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles.
His name could be possibly unknown as his name showed "X△□●" and "???" for the names from the audition tape though this could have been the Mastermind's lie.
