Music Theory/Piano class is run each school year based on student interest. In this course, students will learn basic music theory through learning how to play the piano. Students will work as a group, and independently, and be given time during the class time to practice what they are learning. While this course does not require public performances, students may look to join another performing group the following school year and use what they learned in band, orchestra, or show choir combo band. Students in this course will also be given the opportunity to join concert choir on their two day trips during the school, one in December to NYC, and one in May to a Music in the Parks Festival at various amusement parks, subject to change each school year.
Our music technology lab is brand new for the 2021-2022 School year, and everything that has been put into it is top of the line! Scranton HS has always offered music theory courses to our students, now we can offer them in a much more practice-based way, where students can get daily practice playing piano.
The lab also uses a piano class intercom system, set up so that students can practice in private(using headphones), and the teacher can tune into any student in the class to provide feedback and teach each student individually during the class period. The system is also set up so that students can hear the teacher on the instructor piano(at the front of the class), and can even see the instructor's keyboard on the white board at the front of the room. The room has been set up to provide Scranton HS students with a private lesson format during the class period, making sure that students are moving at a pace that keeps them interested and learning.
The music technology lab also has 8 computers, 5 with midi capability that can also be used to practice piano skills(as well as music editing and writing), and 3 that are fully set up with audio recording capabilities for students interested in programs such as logic, garage band, and others that they can also explore during the class period.
