AVID's support and encouragement continues after graduation.
The following are testimonials from alumni about AVID and its lingering impact on their careers and higher education.
"As you enter the next phase of your life always remember to take a look back to see all that you accomplished and acknowledge those who helped you get there. Being in AVID gave me the structure I needed to keep organized and the critical thinking skills to always be prepared and strive for more. I plan to continue my education adding to my BA in communications from LMU and my MBA in Marketing from Brandman University. This fall I am applying for the 2023 MS in Digital Media Management program at USC and ultimately planning to earn my PhD in Communication from there as well. All of this will not be possible without the solid foundation and motivation that Schurr High School and AVID provided for me."
"The AVID program has helped me in a range of ways, but the main takeaway for me was gaining confidence. In high school I was extremely shy and barely spoke in class. However, being in AVID pushed me to speak up and that was demonstrated in college by me sharing ideas, asking for help, going to office hours and study sessions, asking about job/volunteering opportunities, and getting through those dreaded class presentations. The confidence that AVID helped me developed still helps me today as a teacher, and I am forever grateful for that."
"As a first-generation college student, AVID helped me visualize myself in college at a young age. I was in AVID since 5th grade and I loved hearing from guest speakers who were former students that shared their college experience. It makes a huge difference hearing from alumni, who grew up in the same neighborhood or went to the same high school, go to a prestigious college and thrive. You can too!!! In college, I was able to study engineering, work part-time, and play a sport all four years because of the habits I gained from the weekly AVID binder. In high school, I never considered how important it was to be organized and how easy it is to fall behind if you aren’t organized. Note-taking became second nature and I was able to use my Cornell notes to study for exams. My agenda was always in my backpack to remind me of my responsibilities or to add new ones. This saved me many headaches that I saw my peers run into in college. Now, I live by my Google Calendar and my to-do lists."
"I was part of the AVID program as a student for 6 years and worked for the program for another 6 years. I was very lucky to have had Mr. Ortiz, Mrs. Hansen, Mr. Seto, and Mr. Avila as my AVID teachers. AVID is everything. Being a low-income, first-generation college student was very difficult and scary. AVID made sure I was prepared for the unexpected. Taking notes, collaborating with my peers, communicating with professors were all things that AVID instilled in me. AVID made sure I knew who I was as a person and what I needed to succeed in college. Even now as a teacher, I bring AVID ideas into my classroom. We have tutorials once a week, where students can clear up any questions they have about the class. I even created a project where notebooks were donated to my classroom, which has helped my students stay organized."
Our program works closely with neighboring elementary and intermediate schools to instill AVID and the higher education mindset early on!
