Rationale: Why a Math Center?
Amidst a decrease in MCA scores and in an effort to promote the development of a mathematical community at South High School the Math Center opened in the Fall of 2014. The Math Center serves as the hub for mathematical tutoring, support and challenge here at South High. The center is staffed with a licensed math teacher every hour. This space may be utilized in many ways to enhance and further engage students in the mathematics of their courses. We envision a space in which student-student interactions will be encouraged and refined, a space which will allow for the flexibility needed to meet the social and emotional needs of our students and a space where all math teachers may collaborate to further the mathematical understanding of all South High Students.
Building a Mathematics community: What does it look like?
The South High Math Center is the first line of support for students in need of remediation or an additional challenge. Students may make use of the center in their regular math courses or may be referred to the center through self, teacher, counselor or parent referrals. This system would allow for more flexible support than allowed by year-long enrollment in Support classes and will give students and parents a viable option for furthering the student’s mathematical achievement. The center also serves as the location for before and after school tutoring options with National Honor Society tutors and teachers. Additionally, community volunteers are organized through the center to provide students with additional support.
