What happens in the MC?

Furthering the mathematics community: Primary uses

The Math center is available for scheduled individual appointments, walk-in appointments and referral appointments. Additionally, the center would be used by other math teachers on either a push-in or pull-out model. Small groups of students could be assigned to the center to be provided with additional support, a challenging extension or a hands-on exploration that would help develop greater conceptual understanding. Additionally, the Math Center may be used in the following ways:

-The center will be staffed by SHS students on IP’s to provide tutoring during teacher prep hours (see below). All tutors are trained and overseen by licensed SHS Math teachers.

-The center serves as the hub for mathematics resources including the math lab, manipulatives, teacher schedules, textbooks, etc..

-The center may be utilized for pre-test review sessions, re-assessments and support.

-The center may help students with extended absences regain content missed.

-The center may serve as a space to challenge students while the course teacher reviews concepts with other students.

Beyond the Mathematics Classroom: Secondary Uses

Additionally, we believe the Math Center could provide much needed support to science teachers as well as other content areas that utilize mathematics in their coursework. These interactions would provide for increased interdisciplinary connections for students. Additionally, the center would provide for MCA test prep for juniors and re-testers as required by the state. The Math Center would also like to provide for special sessions on mathematical topics not usually covered in the traditional mathematics classroom. These topics would be presented monthly and may be as varied as: -Test-taking strategies-ACT/SAT prep-Using the Graphing Calculator-Financial Literacy-Social Justice and Mathematics
