Every four years the N.C. State Fair celebrates Century Farm and Bicentennial Farm Families at a reunion. This year saw the largest number of attendees gathered in the program’s history at the Hunt Horse Complex. There are two farms in the Village of Shotwell. Farms include Oaky Grove Farm (Carol and Talmage Brown) and SM McCullers Farm.
Attendees representing the SM McCullers Farm included heirs Patricia Ann McCullers, Mrs. Dorothy Mae Alston Chamberlayne from Richmond, Virginia (also recognized by 2024 Reunion as oldest attendee), Jacque Bell-Benton from Maryland and John Derek McCullers-Jones. Family Guests sharing the occasion included Leigh Ann Hammerbacher (Triangle Land Conservancy), Sharon Peterson (Wake County Planning), Teresa Furr (Wake Soil and Water Conservation) and Jacqueline Marshall Gadison.
Agricultural Commissioner Steve Troxler talked "about how hard it is to be a century farmer and that he does not even qualify and knows how special it is, especially given the challenges of black people owning and holding onto their land for so long. It is special, historic, it is quite amazing."
