A Brief Timeline
Shoreham Oratorio Choir 1961-2025
A Brief Timeline
1961 The organists of St. Mary de Haura, David Bennett, and St. Nicolas, Sheila Chaplin, began to work together, with David playing and Sheila conducting.
1971 Michael Ades succeeds Sheila Chaplin and conducts the choir for 28 years. He continues the partnership with David Bennett, overseeing its growth in numbers and repertoire.
Major works are performed most Good Fridays and at Christmas, choral works by Bach, Handel, Schubert, Brahms and (his greatest love).
Michael conducted Mozart's immortal Requiem both at his first Shoreham concert on Good Friday 1972 and at his last concert on Good Friday 1999.
Michael invited Tony Allen to sing the bass solo for the first time with the choir for the performance of Mozart’s Requiem on Good Friday 1980. As a memorial to Michael, the choir performed it again in Lancing College Chapel on Good Friday 2005.
1990 Tony Allen takes up the baton. Tony started as a soloist in 1980 and worked with the choir for 35 years, 25 of them as Conductor. Consequently Tony is a key person in the rich musical history of Shoreham-by-Sea and a huge debt of gratitude is owed by the many past and present members whom he has helped to inspire.
2016 Marc Yarrow sweeps aside the competition and overwhelmingly wins the vote to become the choir's first "Musical Director".
Still in his mid twenties, Marc had been the Artistic Director of The Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus, who are often remembered for their performances on Last Choir Standing for the BBC.
Marc conducted the winning performance (by BGMC) at the Manchester Amateur Choral Competition against 10 other choirs.
Marc was also the Musical Director for PZAZZ Singers in Chichester, and the Crawley Millennium Concert Band.
In the same yearTim Nail takes over as the choir accompanist and establishes an excellent partnership with Marc Yarrow.
2020 The Covid Pandemic and subsequent lockdowns bring all community choir singing to a close. Choir rehearsals by "Zoom Meetings" spring up.
2022 Released from Covid Lockdowns, the choir celebrates with the much loved and very popular Faure Requiem
2024 Marc Yarrow steps down from the post of Musical Director and the choir hold a successful set of auditions to find a successor.
Lucia Svecova takes up the baton as Guest Conductor.
