"Shokunin Kishitsu" (職人気質)
The combination of these two words creates the concept of the "craftsman's spirit." It's a philosophy that values dedication, precision, and a lifelong commitment to improving one's skills. While often associated with traditional crafts like sushi making, sword making, or gold leaf production, the concept of shokunin kishitsu can be applied to various professions. The core of shokunin kishitsu is the pride that comes from creating something with great skill and care, striving for perfection in every detail.
Started by two local shop teachers from Basking Ridge (Taylor Boehmer and Steve Richards) Shokunin Woodworks was created to pursue a new way of building a community around woodworking. With over 35 combined years of experience teaching in the woodshop, we have refined our career's work into a handful of approachable projects for new and eager woodworkers. Each of us have taken on a multitude of independent commissions over the years, but providing a shared creative space has always been a passion of ours. Our focus relies on letting the wood speak for itself. All of our lumber is hand selected for the best possible yield in grain matching, figure, and character. Something we take pride in, is providing you with pieces that are one of a kind, and not something you can easily find on a shelf. This pride in materials and work is something we live and breathe, and we hope to have that resonate in your experience building with us.
