The last item on the agenda for the June 25 meeting of the LA City Planning Commission is the proposed Restaurant Beverage Program, which would allow restaurants to sell alcohol without requiring a single public hearing. Neither neighborhood councils nor community members would have an opportunity to voice opposition. Qualifying restaurants would have to meet a number of conditions, and the ordinance says these sites will be monitored for compliance. But does the City really do an effective job of monitoring now? The ordinance does not require any consideration of the area's existing alcohol density or crime rate. The Department of City Planning (DCP) claims the ordinance would have no significant impact on LA's communities, but does not offer any data or any research to support this claim.
