Read at Home Folders

Reading at home is key to fostering a lifelong love of books and learning, while also promoting quality time with family. Regular reading increases fluency, confidence, and familiarity with words. It is important for children to read as much as possible, which includes reading on their own as well as listening to stories aloud.

On the first day of every month we will send home your child's Read at Home Folder with a monthly reading log. I am asking your child to for a minimum of 20 minutes, 20 nights each month. Please help your child keep track of his/her reading by filling in the reading log. Your child’s Reading Log Folder will need to be returned by the first day of every month.

How should we read?

Your child will begin to gain confidence as a reader and develop reading fluency by reading a variety of different ways. Young readers become better readers by listening to good readers read and by reading themselves. You may choose to:

· Read to your child while he/she listens

· Read with your child (alternating who reads)

· Listen to him/her read to you

Always be sure to ask your child questions about the book before, during, and after reading to better judge if they are understanding what they are reading. Make sure you check out the 62 Ways sheet for fun ideas in their Read at Home Folder! I have also included a few other sheets in this reading log folder to help your family complete nightly reading!

What should we read?

I encourage you to read whatever you can with your child! However, when your child is reading to you, it is important that you stay on their instructional levels. When something is too easy or too hard, frustration often sets in. As we get more data, your child’s instructional level will be updated in January and May!

Scholastic Book Wizard has a wonderful free app and website to help you determine book levels! The books you have in your library at home are a perfect place to start reading! The Davidson Public Library also has a great selection available. You could even read books online! I am also happy to send home books for your child. If you would like me to send home books, please send me an email!

Have fun reading together! This is the year when you will see your little one make the most gains in becoming a fluent reader. As always, please let me know what questions you have and how I can help!
