3. Right Speech (Wise Communication)
Right Speech means communicating in ways that reduce harm and increase understanding.
It involves avoiding:
False Speech
Deliberate dishonesty.
Divisive Speech
Creating unnecessary conflict or turning people against each other.
Harsh Speech
Communication driven by anger, contempt, or cruelty.
Idle or Unhelpful Speech
Speaking without awareness of impact.
Instead, Right Speech encourages communication that is:
Honest
Kind
Useful
Timely
Example
Instead of:
"You never listen to me."
Try:
"I feel frustrated because I don't feel heard when we're discussing important issues."
The goal is effective communication, not simply being nice.
4. Right Action (Wise Behavior)
Right Action refers to ethical conduct in everyday life.
Traditionally this includes refraining from:
Harming others
Taking what is not freely given
Sexual misconduct
Secularly, it can be understood as:
Respecting others' well-being
Acting with integrity
Taking responsibility for one's behavior
Questions to Consider
Does this action create unnecessary suffering?
Would I be comfortable if others knew what I was doing?
Is this behavior consistent with my values?
Right Action helps create the external conditions that support inner peace.
5. Right Livelihood (Wise Work)
Right Livelihood means earning a living in ways that do not unnecessarily harm oneself or others.
The question is not whether a job is perfect.
Instead, ask:
Does my work contribute positively to society?
Does it require deception or exploitation?
Does it align with my values?
Examples
A therapist helping clients heal would generally align with Right Livelihood.
A business model based on manipulating people through fear or addiction may conflict with it.
Most jobs fall somewhere in between and require thoughtful reflection.
The emphasis is on increasing integrity rather than achieving moral perfection.
