This 1 hour class meets every other week and is open to all ages as long as the student shows attentiveness and good behavior. Students will be exposed to various instruments with demonstrations and then opportunities to try the instrument themselves. Instruments included will be a variety of percussion instruments (shakers, tambourines, maracas, cow bells, etc.) including a full drum set; acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, and piano. Students will then be taught an introduction to rhythm and time keeping. In this section they will learn the different notes used in music (whole, half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes) and how to recognize and count them. After this we will move on to a more in depth experience with the instruments they previewed earlier in the course. The intent is to show the students enough proper technique to be able to hold and make musical sounds with the instrument of focus. By the end of the semester, the student will have a general understanding of many popular instruments and should have enough hands on experience to decide 1) if they are interested in pursuing their music education and 2) what instrument they would like to pursue. It is at this time when the student will be expected to acquire their own instrument so they may be able to have an instrument that they can practice several times a week. This also will transfer the student to a private lesson course appropriate for the instrument and level of the student.
