「単一細胞レベルでの神経系の発生メカニズムの解明」 

ホヤと淡水産巻貝をモデルに、たった一つの卵から脳・神経系が作られる仕組みを調べています。ホヤの脳・神経系は、わずか数百個の細胞で構成されるシンプルなものですが、私たちヒトを含む脊椎動物と非常によく似た様式で作られます。また、巻貝の神経系も比較的少ない細胞数で構成されますが、左右で非対称な構造をしており、複雑な行動を制御します。これらの生物の脳・神経系が作られる仕組みの研究を通して、脊椎動物との共通性・相違性（多様性）がどのような仕組みから成り立つのかを明らかにすることを目標にしています。
