~Daily Life and Culture~
We have a deep affinity for delving into the essence of "life and culture" as we travel around the world. It's the stories woven into the fabric of each place, shaped by its unique environment, history, and everyday innovations, that truly captivate us.
In a world increasingly dominated by globalization, where urban landscapes are dotted with identical brand stores and traditional shops are overshadowed by cheap industrial goods and chain stores, we can't help but feel a tinge of melancholy. The shuttered storefronts of once-vibrant local shopping districts serve as poignant reminders of this changing landscape.
Yet, amidst this homogenization, it's the authentic local experiences that beckon us—the scents and sounds, the rhythms of daily life, the rich tapestry of culture waiting to be discovered. We believe that true understanding and appreciation can only come from immersing ourselves in the genuine essence of each place.
That's why we're on a quest to savor every aspect of "life and culture" in each region we visit—to seek out the hidden gems, to connect with the people, and to uncover the real essence of each community.
【1. Handicrafts】
We seek to immerse ourselves in the artistry and stories of handicrafts from around the world—expressions of local ingenuity, wisdom, and culture. Picture it: by a forest lake, a charming elderly woman creates delicate birch bark crafts; deep in the mountains, surrounded by fields they've cultivated, people embroider intricate designs; in the heart of the desert, vibrant fabrics embody the radiant energy of the sun and earth. We're curious about the lives behind these creations—who makes them, and how they're used.
Through homestays, studio visits, and conversations with artisans, we hope to unravel the significance of these crafts and the stories they carry. While embroidery, basketry, pottery, woodworking, and leatherwork are found across many cultures, each locale infuses its creations with a unique narrative. By exploring these crafts as we journey around the world, we aim to uncover the distinctiveness and beauty of each, gaining a panoramic view of the world's creativity and diversity.
【2. Food and Drinks Culture】
It's not just about the taste and variety of food and drinks, but about understanding their connection to everyday life and learning how to truly enjoy them. When selecting eateries during our travels, we prioritize places where we can indulge in local specialties alongside the locals.
Sampling dishes made from local ingredients paired with regional drinks is the best way to experience the essence and uniqueness of each destination. In local taverns, you'll often find regulars engaging in lively exchanges—a testament to the role these establishments play in fostering community bonds.
As we savor the time-honored flavors, we engage in conversations with the regulars at the counter, seeking recommendations for drinks, food, and plans for tomorrow. It's in these moments that we uncover the hidden gems not found online.
We're eager to discover the diverse drinking cultures around the world and how alcohol adds flavor to everyday life. We yearn to experience the unpredictable charm of analog interactions, which cannot be replicated through screens alone.
【3. Go Exchange】
We aim to experience how people around the world enjoy communication through the game of Go. Go is a simple game played on a wooden board with plain black and white stones. Regardless of age, gender, or nationality, anyone can engage in a match with another person. Moreover, because Go reveals one's personality even without exchanging words, it's often referred to as "hand talk."
Participating in the World Student Pair Go Championship for the first time turned our previous perception of Go upside down. Upon research, we discovered that there are approximately 80 Go associations worldwide, and the game is actually enjoyed by younger generations abroad as a form of board game entertainment. In some parts of the world, Go is played while enjoying activities like swimming or camping, and there are even tournaments held in the midst of forests.
We're eager to break free from the existing image of Go and explore, learn, and experience the diverse "Go communities" around the world.
