Shillelagh No 1 National School has long been a participant of An Taisce's Greenschools Programme.
In 2019 we received our 5th Green Flag; Global Citizenship, Litter and Waste. Fifth and Sixth classes entered a national Global Goals competition as they worked towards that last flag they were thrilled to receive a third prize.
Following this success a group of Fifth and Sixth Class children represented the school at The National Forum for Quality Education in 2019 , where, following lots of research and preparation, they made a great impression during their presentation in Dublin Castle on the day.
Our mini company was set up in 2016. It serves to give the pupils a voice in some of the activities we organise, nurturing their entrepreneurial and co-operative skills as they organise various events from Car Boot sales to Sponsored Walks. The team holds meetings, decides on their chosen activities, learns how to organise and promote the events and helps carry them through. They also oversee the use of any of our garden produce. At the other end they have some input as to where they would like to see money invested in the school and have purchased garden benches, books, equipment and they have subsidised buses for school trips. Each year the mini company chooses a charity to support and the proceeds of one of their events will be directed to this charity. It has proven a wonderful opportunity for Sixth Class pupils to step up in the world before their transition to Second Level.
