Shillelagh No 1 National School is a small rural Primary School serving the local Church of Ireland community and is under the patronage of the Church of Ireland Bishop of Cashel and Ossory. The school is committed to fostering and maintaining an atmosphere where children grow through their encounters with others, through their own endeavours and through collaboration with their peers and teachers.
We strive to promote pupil's self esteem and confidence by nurturing the creative, cultural, emotional, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual growth of the child, preparing them to make a positive contribution to society. We seek to help the children explore their sense of environmental and civic responsibility based on appreciation of the diversity of the world in which we live.
We strive to reflect the ethos of the Church of Ireland faith, offering a space where people live with and are taught by one another in a way that includes our Anglican traditions and values while fostering a respect for all traditions. Religious education is taught daily in accordance with the Church of Ireland syllabus.
The school in Shillelagh was built by Earl Fitzwilliam following a survey conducted by the Rev. John Firth, Curate of Carnew, throughout the barony of Shillelagh. In an attempt to improve on education throughout the estate four new schools were commissioned, at Coolroe, Carnew, Coolkenno and Shillelagh. The school was built in Shillelagh in 1821, for the education of all the children in the area. Hence we celebrate our bi-centenary in 2021.
