BAE542 (Biofuels and Bioproducts) (taught every Fall semester | Syllabus)

The course is designed for undergraduate seniors and graduate students who are interested in biofuels and bioproducts. In this course, we will explore the history and current status of biofuels development, the policy drivers and stakeholders, current industrial players, mainstream processing technologies, and future biofuels and bioproducts research themes. Expanding the technical aspects, this course will cover biochemical conversion techniques for producing bioethanol, biobutanol, biodiesel, biogas, and other advanced biofuels and thermochemical conversion techniques towards syngas, bio-oil, and biochar, etc. Along with classroom lectures, you will gain hands-on practices on how to make biofuels during the lab/project sections.

BAE310 (Heat and Mass Transfer in Biosystems) (taught every Spring semester | Syllabus)

The course is designed for undergraduate juniors or seniors in biomedical, food and bio-processing and bio-environmental engineering concentrations. In this course, we will cover fundamental principles of steady state and transient heat and mass transfer in biosystems engineering. Heat transfer will include conduction, convection, and radiation. Mass transfer will include liquid-gas, solid-gas, and solid-liquid equilibrium scenarios, as well as convective, diffusive, and osmotic mass transfer. Governing equations and boundary conditions for both heat and mass transfer will be included with special attention to industrial, biological, and bioenvironmental problems.

BAE775 (Processional Practice Seminar) (taught every Fall semester | Syllabus)

The course is designed for BAE graduate students and is a required course.  Four themes cover: 1) framing your research and technical writing; 2) proposal development and mock review panel; 3) tools for successful research; and 4) multimodal communication and teaching skills. At the conclusion of this course, the students are expected to accomplish: prepare professional-quality tables and graphs to summarize scientific data; peer-review a scientific article; prepare a research proposal by working with the advisor, deliver an oral scientific presentation to include supporting visual aids, present scientific studies using poster format, communicate scientific information using outreach methods, demonstrate familiarity with university-level instructional techniques, and market individual experiences and qualifications through curriculum vitae and interviews.
