Intellectual Generosity
The work around Intellectual Generosity asks the questions in regards to how we can love with all our minds. Having passion means that we are willing to pay the costs for the things we love, and we are most energized and generous when working within our passions. The currency for loving with our minds is measured by understanding. It's hard to fully love the things we don't understand after all.
Note: Some of my content is presented in Christian communities, but it's not meant to be exclusive to any faith. Additionally, this work focuses on neurodiversity and belonging.

Sherol, an AI Research Engineer from a top tech firm, has been working on ways that AI can provide creative leverage for over 10 years. She works on representational alignment for how generative models can better adapt to user intent, and is excited about the ways we can use technology to teach and cultivate creativity in people across diverse communities. Sherol is often asked how we should be using AI. She feels that the question is ultimately about the type of people we want to be as part of human society. That answer should inform how we use the tools we invent, not the other way around.

Abiding Upwards in our Pursuit of AI
The Gathering | 2023
What does it mean to love with all our minds and abiding upwards in our inventions. For faith, it’s interesting to see the AI marvels cause people to re-evaluate what it means to be human. I think our faith or ethics should focus on that. What we should want from ourselves? 1) To live out the greatest commandment, 2) Love with our minds in an age with so much AI, 3) Love God with our minds fully by staying (hungry) curious, 4) Love our neighbor by paying the cost of understanding
Christianity Today | 2023
“As a tool, AI doesn’t achieve anything intrinsically,” says Sherol Chen, a research engineer at a big tech company. “We ought not to reassign our callings and responsibilities to the tools we invent.” Loving our neighbors can’t be outsourced to the robots. It will have to come from us. And rather than replacing our relationships, when used rightly, generative AI just might make them stronger.
Passion Talks | 2023
While there is so much more to our lives than our projects, we often sow our talents into discrete deliverables. As stewards, we can pray and plan for each of our projects. Pick 5 projects for this guided prayer journaling. Record the revelations in the following section, and write down your projects below. Choose one of your passion projects and in this section, you will sketch out the poster in three columns. We will be drafting physical posters in this workshop with pen and paper to gather feedback, gain prophetic insights, and enable direct commissioning.
Human Flourishing in the Age of AI
Asuza Pacific University | 2023
The conference featured plenary speaker Sherol Chen, PhD, a computer science researcher who studied AI and has worked for a big tech company for more than a decade. Chen described the history of AI and how the field has evolved over the years. Among the many misconceptions about AI, Chen noted that most people don’t realize that AI has been around since the 1950s and how much research has gone into it. She said there are countless papers and reports that are easily accessible and many people who aim to teach and explain AI to make understanding it less daunting.
