R&C Neal Plastering Aaron Armstrong Memorial 2018

Finalists: Chris Thurman-Newell (L) and Troy Millward (R)

Write-up by Steve Ritchie

Troy Millward did the double on the Aaron Armstrong Memorial on Sunday, adding to his success last year and getting his name on the trophy for the 2nd time.

Island #2 Troy sauntered through a tough field of 41 entrants from Sheppey and Sittingbourne, losing only 8 frames throughout the day. In his first match he whitewashed Sittingbourne's Martyn Lumby Sr 4-0 in double-quick time before overcoming Dan Townshend 5-2 in the Last 16.

Tony Gray Jr didn't prove a challenge for Troy in the quarter-finals, only managing to claim 1 frame in a 5-1 loss to the in-form Millward. Troy's semi-final was his toughest match of the day (if I do say so myself) as he came up against Island #5 Steve Ritchie. Steve took a 2-0 lead, but a bit of bad run let Troy in and Troy took a 4-2 lead before eventually winning 6-4 in a tight affair.

The other finalist, Chris Newell, was very much the form horse of the day. The Island #11 and Sheppey A regular played Martyn Lumby Jr in the 1st round proper, and made a very difficult match look easy work by winning 4-1. My apologies to both Martyn Lumby's for both drawing the finalists in the first round.

In the Last 16 Newell overcame Sheppey A teammate Brad Chambers 5-2, before taking on Neptune G captain Mark Popple and winning 5-1.

Once again the semi-final was the closest match of the draw, which saw Chris take on George Elder. A battle of two in-form players went to a decider, which Chris just managed to clinch and take the 6-5 win, to see him in his first final for over a year and rise up to 8th in the rankings.

The final looked set to be a cracker with a battle of class vs form, but Chris seemingly ran out of steam in the final and lost his way a bit: paving the path for Troy to take a 7-1 win and £300 for his day's work. Chris took home £150 for his valiant effort, semi-finalists took £65 and quarter-finalists took £20.

Thank you very much to Robbie and Craig Neal from R&C Plastering for sponsoring the competition - without them we could not have provided such a great day and a good prize fund. Thank you also to Les Church who donated £50 to the prize fund in Aaron's memory!
