Jim Morris Memorial 2018

MAIN EVENT

Eventual winner Tony Gray - beating Troy 5-2 in the final

Write-up by Steve Ritchie

An eventful day at Neptune Snooker Club saw Island No. 1 Tony Gray Sr take the trophy once again at the Jim Morris Memorial.

It's a fifth successive win for Tony who seems to thrive after returning from his 12th holiday to a red-hot country each year.

In the early rounds Tony dispatched easily of top 16 opponents in Dan Townshend and Dave Goldsmith, both 5-2, before whitewashing Sheppey A's leading player Brad Chambers 5-0 in the quarter finals.

The semi finals proved a tougher test for Tony when he faced Division 3's Keith Jones. Certainly not an inexperienced player himself, Sheppey Shipwreckers captain Keith battled bravely, however Tony's class showed as he came out the 6-4 victor.

Troy's route to the final started with a similarly easy-looking dispatch of more than capable players in Justin Adams and Frankie Lee, beating both 5-1.

A tough quarter final followed where he went 3-1 down to Sheppey #6 Steve Ritchie, but Troy clawed his way back one frame at a time to eventually win 5-3. Charlie Minta didn't have the run of the balls against Troy in the semis and fell to the same fate as Troy's previous victims, losing 6-3.

The final was a tough battle between the current IoSPL #1 in Tony and the provisional #1 in Troy, and having been level until 5-5, the master pulled away from the maestro and took the final 2 frames and £300 in the process. Troy took home £130.

Thank you to Charlie and Carl at Neptune Snooker Club for hosting and Pro Build Kent for sponsoring the competition.
