Research Summary
Our research is centered on exploration of novel topological structures of light and other wave fields. By bridging concepts from topology, nanophotonics, and optical angular momentum, etc, our works aim to establish a new paradigm for topological information encoding, transmission, and manipulation using structured waves. We are dedicated to pushing the frontiers of wave physics by discovering, generating, and controlling topologies and complex states across different physical systems. Our works transcends traditional boundaries, establishing a unified framework for topology in wave-matter interactions, with implications from photonics to fluid dynamics and quantum mechanics. We have pioneered a series of breakthroughs that have opened new avenues in modern physics:
We proposed and generated the world's first free-space skyrmions, demonstrating that these once condensed-matter-bound topological textures can robustly propagate in free space (NC 2021+ACS 2022).
We pioneered the field of topological hydrodynamics, being the first to discover topological water waves and realize robust particle trapping and manipulation with them (Nature 2025 [Nature Video]).
We developed the world's first meta-generator for optical skyrmions, a critical step towards their on-chip application in topological information processing (NC 2024 [PhysPRG news]).
We realized 3D topological phase transitions of light (PRL 2025 [AAAS EurekAlert]).
We discovered the world-first space-time hopfion crystals (PRL 2025 [ScienceDaily]).
We invented an "electromagnetic cannon" for emitting toroidal vortices, showcasing the control of complex, resilient pulses for communication and sensing. (APR 2024+SciAdv 2025) [Sabine Daily Science News [YouTube]].
We experimentally generated spin texture from photonic crystal, providing a powerful tool for classical optical computing and quantum information protocols (PRL 2025 [PRL Editor's Suggestion; APS Featured in Physics]).

Research Directions
Topological structures and singularities of waves provide a number of nontrivial phenomena and additional functionalities as compared to a single plane wave. Topological waves underpin modern photonics, yet they are equally important for quantum matter waves, acoustics, water waves, etc.

Structured light can be emitted directly from a laser, by imprinting an intracavity twist on the circulating light, but it requires judicious laser cavity design to break nature’s angular momentum degeneracy. Without this, the laser produces equal measures of both helicities, for no net angular momentum.
