Shelties are usually said to be heavy shedding dogs. That is true but most of the fur gets trapped under the thick outer coat and should be brushed out. The shedding is not noticable.
A sheltie should be groomed every one or two days. Grooming gets fur out from under the outer coat. Grooming also prevents a shelties fur from getting matted.
Shelties come in 7 different colors. The most common colors are sables, but tricolor, merle and black are common too.
