There is a reason why The Tempest by Shakespeare is still relevant till this day and is one of the most read books in education teaching methods. With a great moral of forgiveness shown at the end of the story and the roles of justice and mercy being served, Prospero, the main character, shows the reader even in subtle ways, mercy to the other characters even when they did not deserve it. For example, when Caliban, an evil demon creature, made attempts to assault Prospero’s daughter, Miranda, Prospero made the decision of making Caliban into a slave and do the heavy labor work around their home. Before this happened, Caliban was basically living with Prospero and Miranda rent free whilst getting fed good food. However, with this action Prospero needed to punish Caliban for his mistakes so he made him a server along with another being. In my opinion, I think Caliban got away with that deed too lightly. If anything, he should have been kicked out and shunned and many others thought that he should have been killed, however, Prospero turned the other cheek and showed him some mercy when a situation like that should have been taken care of differently.
One time back in the fall of 2018, a coworker texted me about this rumor that they have heard that was spreading like wildfire in the workplace. The rumor was about me that I cannot give full details on but if the higher ups were to hear about it, it would ruin my reputation even though the whole story was a lie and had no truth told whatsoever. When I heard about this, I was furious, I wanted to find this person who started it and body slam them against the wall. I actually knew who that person was which made it worse because I knew who I can go to, to get justice. Later that night, I went through different scenarios in my head on how to confront this person, but all these scenarios consisted of revenge, hateful feelings and I knew that I was going to have to cool off and take a breather before I knew what my next move will be. I went to work the next day and I saw her at the end of my shift going into her shift and all I wanted to do was drag her to the bathroom and yell at her for creating contention for no reason. So, I ended up talking to my supervisor/human resource manager about the situation to receive some guidance and they talked me through the whole thing. I realized that there are some things that I need to prioritize and worry about and other things that are just not worth my time. Everything I spilled to my supervisor that day was off the record, I did not want to get this person in trouble, and I figured that I would just let it go because in a year it would not even matter.
Justice and mercy are to be used wisely depending on the situation. We have rules and laws for a reason, so that we can avoid some of the inevitable consequences that come with breaking them. Sometimes justice takes matters into its own hands. However, with mercy, we always need to show compassion and need not judge others for their mistakes because we are not perfect ourselves. As it was said in General Conference, we are to forgive everyone no matter who it is, only Christ can be the true judge and can chose who is to be forgiven or not. Forgiving is sometimes the only thing you can do in most situations, if you want to move forward and move on with your life, you must let go of those negative hurt feelings to push through the darkness so that you can see the light and gain clarity on what your next moves should be. That is what I plan to do for the future so that I can prosper in life.
