Once your nest box is installed, regular checks help ensure birds use it safely. Monitoring allows you to see when nesting begins, track eggs and young, and identify problems such as predators, parasites, or invasive species. A quick weekly check improves nesting success and helps protect bluebirds during the breeding season.
Check your nest box once each week during nesting season, from late February through August.
Approach the box calmly and tap the side lightly before opening so the bird leaves safely.
Open the door, look inside, and note what you see. Record the stage of the nest and count eggs or young if present.
Close the door securely after each check and leave the area.
Weekly checks help track nesting progress and identify problems early.
