v. shataram's shejari (hindi version titled padosi) is a kind of impassioned plea for national unity, filmed during the struggle for independence and hindu/muslim sectarian violence. it's all very broadly drawn, but the film is remarkably in its portrayal of village life in both unity and disarray, patiently building up its communal world in the first half to see it torn slowly apart in the second.
