The length of the waiting list varies quite a lot. On average 6-8 plots become available per year.
£40 per year for a full plot and £25 for a half plot. Plus a deposit of £20.
Allotments are traditionally measured in rods where a full plot is about 10 rods or 250 square metres and a half 5 rods or 125 square metres. Our plots are roughly this sort of size, however do vary a little as paths move over time and new plots have been created where there were previously none.
We are lucky to have great loamy soil at the site, but it can always benefit from the addition of compost and/or manure.
Unfortunately, Woking Borough Council no longer allows any livestock to be kept on site.
Obviously the more often you come the better! But generally, spending a 2-3 hours per week tending to your plot during the growing season (plus extra time watering if necessary) is usually enough to cultivate and maintain it.
We have running water with taps spaced about 20 metres apart - so hopefully you won't have to walk too far with your water can! We also have some communal tools such as a lawn mower, strimmer and soon some wheel barrows. Sadly there are no toilets on our site.
There is parking for 6-8 cars, depending on their size outside the gate.
You need to be paying your council tax to Woking Borough Council in order to be eligible for a plot.
No, as part of the terms and conditions of obtaining a plot you must agree not to use any weedkillers, poisons, etc of any kind. They run off into the water table, affecting crops on neighbouring plots and the wildlife.
Only dwarf fruit trees are allowed to be planted on your plot. This is generally dwarf M9 or M26 rootstock. The idea is that they would only reach 6-8ft so that they don't cause shading on other plots and do not present problems to remove.
