Finally! The explanation for the towing incident was revealed...but at what cost? This part focused a lot on Scottie and her own journey, and I did not get to see a lot of Irene, but what I got was important. I got to finally see her being vulnerable, and explaining herself. Because no matter how much I truly cared for and protected her character in relation to Scottie’s actions and thoughts, pride is a genuine flaw of hers.
At the beginning of the part, Irene shows her more vulnerable side yet, when she asks Scottie to kiss her, and confesses her feelings for her. She also confirms she is 100% over Charlotte, and understands when Scottie confesses she is not over Tally yet. This fact is interesting, as it shows that Irene’s compassion does not necessarily come from a sense of superiority, but rather genuine kindness. So, Scottie was not ready yet, and that hurts Irene, but she does not try to pressure her, which I am grateful for.
Irene appears again after Scottie has messed up. And she is crying. I think what really bothers Irene is not the fact that Scottie kissed Tally, but rather that Scottie was not honest with her. Yes, Scottie told her she was not ready for a relationship yet, but Irene is right when she points out Scottie is not trying to cut Tally out of her life. Irene does not deserve that.
Later, while Scottie does not appear physically, she does appear in conversation. When Scottie points out how Irene appreciates the difficult conversations rather than the big romantic gestures...Yes! She has got it! That is exactly what Scottie needed to realize about Irene. That is why it hurt her so much that Scottie was not sincere with her, that is why she would rather “not get in her mess”. It is not that Irene did not want to be by Scottie’s side while she got better, or that Irene expected nothing but perfection coming from her. No. Irene wants and needs good communication. After her relationship of dubious nature with a girl who betrayed her...yes, she needed someone that would be honest with her.
“So what do I deserve?”
“A million things.”
And when Scottie brings up the Towing Incident, I was not expecting what I got but oh my Gods, it made sense. Of course Irene is not perfect, and of course it was her hurting pride what made her do it. It was a misunderstanding, which is a relief, but it was not OK from Irene not to say anything to Scottie.
I am really happy with the resolution I am getting. While it is not over yet--I am still waiting for the lovebirds to get together officially--I appreciate they did not rush into the relationship. Both of them have learned from their mistakes, and want this to work out. They really care about each other, which is beautiful.
I am really curious about how it will end. I hope I get positively destroyed.
