A national program called Night to Shine that provides prom experiences for people with disabilities came to Yakima for the first time Feb. 9. Heights Church organized the event held at the YMCA and Yakima Rotary Aquatic Center.

Nick Crider, pastor of the Heights Church and organizer for the local event, says a church member suggested hosting Night to Shine. Crider said the best part about presenting the prom was being able to offer something special to an overlooked and underserved population in the Yakima community. He also appreciates how the activity brought people together to serve those with special needs.

Crider said the preparations for Night to Shine took about six months and involved more than 200 volunteers. In addition to members of Heights Church, those volunteering for the event came from other churches and included youths from Young Life groups.

Some of the guests arrived at Night to Shine in a limousine. Attendees entered the event on a red carpet and were welcomed by some of the volunteers who cheered them on and held signs with encouraging messages.

Once they entered, the participants could have their picture taken by a photographer or use a photo booth. There were also stations where guests could get their shoes shined by volunteers. Volunteers helped attendees with hair, makeup and ties. Guests danced to music provided by a DJ and enjoyed food and drinks.

Yakima resident Vicky Isaak, one of those buddies, said she was inspired to volunteer at Night to Shine because she thought it would be a great opportunity to help people with disabilities have a fun night. Lisa Reinmuth, another buddy from Yakima, said she decided to help out at Night to Shine because she felt it sounded like a great way to honor kids with special needs and make sure they feel loved and special.

Many people asked Crider if the prom will happen again next year, and Night to Shine was so successful he is certain it will. Crider said his goal is to start planning next year's Night to Shine sooner.

Tearza Gonzalez, a volunteer who took pictures at the event, said the most exciting part about Night to Shine was meeting new people and helping the community. The most memorable experience for her was seeing everyone smile and dance. She plans on attending the prom again in the future because it warmed her heart to see so many people having a great time.

This year, the party will be bigger than ever before. Liberty Baptist Church in Dublin, will host a parade-style night to shine. The attendees can have their car decorated and then get out to walk the red carpet. There will also be a dance floor and a trunk-or-treat styled area too.

Every girl deserves a moment in the spotlight. The Miss Spectacular 2012 pageant, held this week at Great Oak High School, gave 14 special needs students in the Temecula Valley Unified School District a chance to shine.

The pageant is an opportunity for the girls to share their beauty and talents with their friends, family and classmates. It was created as a way to celebrate a group of girls who otherwise could be overlooked on a large, busy high school campus.

This year, the event was expanded to include students from all three high schools in the Temecula district, said Kutscher, who organized the pageant. The Temecula Valley High School student government and dance teams joined forces to help produce the showcase and about 1,000 people attended at Great Oak on Wednesday, Nov. 28.

Some of the girls took full advantage of their time on stage, strutting down the red carpet and striking poses with their male escorts as the audience cheered in appreciation and the parents wiped tears and snapped photos.

Others, including Hailey Surrell, a 15-year-old Great Oak freshman, were a little more reserved. Hailey hesitated when her name was called for introductions, but finally emerged from behind the stage as the crowd chanted her name.

Jessica Lozon, whose daughter Emileigh participated in the pageant for the second time this year, said she was a little uncertain about the event initially. She wondered how Emileigh, now a sophomore, and the other contestants would be received by the crowd. Those worries were quickly quelled. 152ee80cbc
