Heath Ledger
1979-2008
Heath Ledger was born in 1979.He acted in television and films and moved to America in 1998. He stared in 10 things I Hate About you (1999)The Patriot(2000), Monsters Ball(2000), A Knights Tale(2001), Broke Back Mountain (2005) And The Dark Knight (2008).
Heath Ledger won ‘Best Actor’ award from the Australian Film Institute in 2006 and was nominated for the academy award best actor award. Heath also played Ned Kelly in the movie Ned Kelly.
Heath also stared in I’m not their with six other actors playing the same role which he had to share the 2007 Independent Spirit Robert Altman Award. A few months after he played his role as The Joker. He died in his apartment in New York from an accidental overdose of pills.
STEVE IRWIN
1962-2006
Steve Irwin was born in Victoria in 1962. His dad was a keen enthusiast of reptiles and moved his family to Queensland in 1970 to start a small reptile park at Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast.Living in the Zoo, Steve grew up with animals of all kinds, taking part in the animals daily feeding, care and maintenance. When Steve was young his dad tought him everything about reptiles when Steve was 9 he was jumping on crocodiles in North Queensland rivers at night. As he grew older Steve followed in his father’s footsteps and volunteered his services to the Queensland Government's East Coast Crocodile Management program which saw him spend years living on his own in the mosquito infested creeks, rivers and mangroves of North Queensland catching huge crocodiles single-handed. His record of successful catches is still staggering to this day.
He had a reunion with his friend,television producer John Stainton. John helped steve make his first documentary 'THE CROCODILE HUNTER'. Steve has now filmed over 70 episodes of "The Crocodile Hunter", 53 episodes of "Croc Files", 43 episodes of “Croc Diaries” and his next television series is called “The New Breed Vets” for release in 2005. In June 1992, Steve married Terri Raines from Oregon USA. They had met a few months earlier when Terri visited the Zoo whilst on holidays in Australia.
In 2006 when Steve was filming his documentary on the waters wild life he got a bit to close and got killed by a sting rays barb. Steves funeral was held in the crocoseum.
CATHY FREEMAN
1973 - Present
Cathy Freeman began athletics at a young age with her brother Garth. Her first coach was her step dad. In Cathy’s teens she competed in the 100,200 metres and high jump. Cathy won gold in the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games which made her the first ever Aboriginal to win gold in the Commonwealth Games. At the age of 16 she was selected to go to the 1990 World Championships in Bulgaria.
Cathy won gold in both the 200m and 400m in the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Canada. Cathy was in the Australian 4 X 400m relay team who finished first but were disqualified. During the 1994 season, Cathy took 1.3 seconds off her best time in the 400m race. She also set all-time personal bests in the 100m (11.24 seconds) and the 200m (22.25 seconds).
Cathy’s most successful run was in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Cathy won the 400m title in 49.11 seconds. When Cathy took a victory lap she carried both the Australian flag and the Aboriginal flag. After her Olympic triumph, Freeman chose to take a break from the track, not competing during the 2001 season. During 2002, Freeman returned to the track to compete as a member of Australia's victorious 4x400m relay team at the 2002 Commonwealth games
Freeman announced her retirement in 2006 and has become a spokesman for the aboriginal people. A fearless promoter of her Aboriginal culture. "I just wanted to show I am proud of who I am and where I come from. I would love to one day go out to the bush and spend time with the elders of my culture, and get back to my roots."
