Lomonosov Moscow State University
...Denique caelesti sumus omnes semine oriundi;
omnibus ille idem pater est, unde alma liquentis
umoris guttas mater cum terra recepit,
feta parit nitidas fruges arbustaque laeta
et genus humanum, parit omnia saecla ferarum,
pabula cum praebet quibus omnes corpora pascunt
et dulcem ducunt vitam prolemque propagant;...

International recognition of Lomonosov Moscow State University
Before I give the official rating statistics below, I would like to express my personal opinion regarding two faculties of Lomonosov Moscow State University – the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics and the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics.
If we consider the combination of depth and breadth of education that is given to undergraduate and postgraduate students in these two faculties, then Lomonosov Moscow State University is unrivalled worldwide among universities. Speaking of the breadth of education, I mean both the variety of disciplines taught, and the very thorough connection between these diverse disciplines covering almost all fields and subdivision of modern applied mathematics (especially at the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics) and pure mathematics (especially at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics). In these two faculties of Lomonosov Moscow State University, any graduating student who was at least middling, besides to his/her main narrow speciality, is automatically (as the saying goes, on default) a good professional also in the field of mathematical modelling – in the ability to apply mathematical knowledge in the most diverse mathematical and near-mathematical disciplines to the most diverse areas of the natural and human sciences, technology, economics, medicine, geology, the environment, sociology, linguistics, and many, many other areas of human life. I saw such versatility only among those specialists and scientists who were educated in the above two faculties of Lomonosov Moscow State University.
As regards the so-called rating tables annually compiled by various international organizations, I can say that Lomonosov Moscow State University should be self-sufficient, as it was during the Soviet times – in the era of the highest prosperity and power of Lomonosov Moscow State University from the standpoint of both the quality of education and scientific results, – and not seek after a rating which far from always does not accurately reflect the true state of affairs. I am firmly convinced of this – as the saying goes, all that glitters is not gold.
