Informatics Knowledge: An informatics knowledge competency that enables nurses to improve their practice is recognizing the importance or use of nursing data, as well as the fact that computers are only able to facilitate nursing care and cannot perform certain human functions. It is important to formulate ethical decisions in computing and to acknowledge the importance of clinicians' involvement in the design, selection, implementation, and evaluation of health care systems. This paper describes the present manual systems, defines how computerized information management impacts nursing roles, determines limitations and reliability of computerized patient monitoring systems, and defines how computerized information management impacts the role of the nurse.
