My first professional conference presentation was titled "Storytelling in the Writing Center: Personal Narratives for ESL Tutoring" which I gave at the International Writing Centers Association Conference in 2015. I remember standing at the front of the small meeting room at the Wyndham Grand in Pittsburgh with my fellow college writing center tutors and our center director sitting in the audience. Maybe two or three other participants joined them in the audience, and even though I was presenting almost entirely to a room of my colleagues, I was confident we were doing something important. After my talk, my writing center colleagues and the people I didn't know in the audience engaged in a lively 20-25 minute Q&A which felt more like a discussion. I was hooked. As an early-career researcher and teacher, the value of regular intellectual activity and social connection at conferences is something I cherish. What's more, as an administrator, I look to involve my students in research and conferencing opportunities as ways to nurture their commitments to intellectual social engagement beyond the classroom or workplace.
