Baodai Nong (“Treasure Belt Lane”) was named after the Treasure Belt Gate, also known also as the Little East Gate, in the east part of the walled city. The street’s path still repeats the curve of the old city wall, which is now gone.
“Baodai Lane is a narrow passage behind the buildings along Renmin Road. When the city wall was still in place, Baodai Lane was a footpath at its base, on the inside. It led to the Treasure Belt Gate (Baodaimen), known colloquially as the Little East Gate. This gate connected the markets around the Temple of the City God with the booming neighborhood outside the city wall, at the Huangpu riverfront, known since the nineteenth century as the Sixteenth Ward (Shiliupu). A bounty of goods moved to and from the river port, and various related trades – money-changers, silversmiths, pawnbrokers, commission agents – abounded on both sides of the city wall.”
From here you can walk to: Wutong Road, Fangbang Road, Sipailou Road, Guangqi Road, Huacao Lane and Kangjia Lane.
