The Intelligent Materials and Systems (IMaS) Lab develops integrated systems using multifunctional materials with sensing, computing, and adapting abilities. We engineer low-carbon ceramics to exhibit piezoelectric, piezoresistive, and memristive behavior, enabling structures that monitor their own condition and materials that process information at the point of sensing. Our work spans three connected thrusts: designing intelligent, sustainable materials for smart sensing and neuromorphic computing; multiscale characterization of ceramics from the nanoscale to the structural scale; and, in collaboration with partner labs, integrating these materials into structural health monitoring systems for civil infrastructure.
