Research Overview
My research investigates the multiscale nature of turbulence in collisionless plasmas, with particular emphasis on coherent magnetic structures, intermittency, and energy conversion in the solar wind and Earth's magnetosheath. Turbulent plasmas contain a broad range of structures, including current sheets, magnetic holes, vortices, and reconnection regions, whose formation and evolution are closely connected to the local plasma conditions and kinetic processes.
Using high-resolution spacecraft observations from MMS, Parker Solar Probe, Solar Orbiter, and Wind, I examine the statistical properties, characteristic scales, and plasma environments of these structures. A central focus of my ongoing research is understanding how turbulent fluctuations and coherent structures interact across fluid and kinetic scales, and how their contributions to particle heating and energy conversion can be quantified. I also aim to connect spacecraft observations with numerical simulations to investigate the physical origin and evolution of these structures.
Key Scientific Questions
Multiscale turbulence: How do turbulent fluctuations and energy transfer evolve from MHD scales to ion and electron kinetic scales, and how do plasma conditions influence their spectral properties?
Formation and evolution of coherent structures: What physical mechanisms govern the formation, characteristic scales, and evolution of current sheets, magnetic holes, and vortices in turbulent plasmas?
Intermittency and energy conversion: How much do different classes of coherent structures contribute to pressure–strain interactions, electromagnetic energy conversion, and particle heating relative to the surrounding turbulent plasma?
Magnetic-hole dynamics: How are magnetic holes associated with particle trapping, temperature anisotropy, plasma waves, and local energy conversion? Can their observational signatures distinguish formation, mature, and decay phases?
Shock–turbulence interactions: How does Earth's bow shock modify upstream turbulence, and are magnetosheath current sheets inherited from the solar wind or generated locally?
Observational constraints: How accurately can multispacecraft measurements resolve kinetic-scale structures and quantify their associated plasma gradients and energy conversion?
Selected Scientific Contributions
Solar-Wind Current Sheets
I have investigated the physical properties of solar-wind current sheets at 1 au, including their characteristic spatial scales and dependence on plasma beta. These studies provide observational constraints on the relationships between turbulent magnetic structures and the surrounding solar-wind plasma.
Magnetic Holes in Collisionless Plasmas
My research examines the occurrence, morphology, and spatial scales of magnetic holes in the magnetosheath and solar wind. Statistical analyses using MMS and Wind observations help characterise their magnetic signatures, plasma-scale properties, and variations across different plasma environments.
Turbulence Across Heliospheric Environments
I investigate magnetic turbulence and its spectral properties in the ambient solar wind and within interplanetary structures, including ICME sheaths and magnetic obstacles. These studies compare turbulent behaviour across different plasma environments and examine the influence of local conditions on magnetic fluctuations and characteristic scales.

Current and Future Research Directions
My ongoing and planned research combines statistical spacecraft observations with comparisons to numerical plasma simulations to investigate the physical processes operating within turbulent collisionless plasmas.
Structure-resolved energy conversion: Quantifying the contributions of reconnecting and non-reconnecting current sheets, magnetic holes, vortices, and other coherent structures to plasma energy conversion and particle heating.
Magnetic-hole formation and evolution: Investigating the origin, characteristic scales, and kinetic properties of magnetic holes in the magnetosheath and solar wind, including their association with particle trapping, temperature anisotropy, and wave activity.
Multiscale turbulence and generalized Ohm's law: Examining magnetic, electric-field, velocity, and density fluctuations across fluid and kinetic scales to assess the relative contributions of different physical terms to the observed electric field.
Shock processing of turbulence and magnetic structures: Using MMS multispacecraft observations to investigate changes in turbulent spectra, intermittency, magnetic discontinuities, and coherent structures across Earth's bow shock.
Observational and numerical comparisons: Developing comparisons between spacecraft measurements and kinetic plasma simulations to assess energy-conversion diagnostics, structure classification, and the limitations introduced by finite spacecraft separations.
Together, these investigations seek to establish how multiscale turbulence and coherent magnetic structures influence energy transfer, kinetic-scale dynamics, and particle heating in heliospheric and magnetospheric plasmas.
