Principles of Polymer Chemistry
Prerequisite:
Should have fundamental knowledge in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and Physical Chemistry equivalent to the courses offered by the department of Chemistry for first the two years of i.MSc (Chemistry) at CUTN.
Any desirous student interested, who had not undergone the aforesaid courses or equivalent courses, shall contact the course instructor, clear the minimum requirement examination before crediting the course.
Credits: 3
Level: Moderate (400 level) to advanced (600 level). Note: Ph.D students opting course will be evaluated separately (advanced level), however the course will be dealt together with other students
Objective:
This course will give a perspective on the history of the development in the field of polymer science; gives an overview on various polymerization techniques; functional polymers and their application. The course is divided into 5 parts. Syllabus given below is an overview and course contents will be upgraded on par with research findings.
Part 1 : History and development of the field of polymers, classification, representation and nomenclature of polymers
Part 2 : Free Radical polymerization and Kinetics of free radical polymerization; Emulsion Polymerization
Part 3 : Condensation polymerization or addition polymerization, Kinetics of addition polymerization
Part 4 : Controlled living polymerization a) cationic b) anionic and c) living free radical polymerization
Part 5 : Other polymerization techniques - ring opening, ring closing metathesis polymerization, frontal polymerization etc.,
Evaluation Methods:
Cumulative Formative Assessment 40: End Semester Examination - 60:
1. Two CFA's will be conducted of 15 marks each
