Fall 2022 MA English Graduates
Congratulations to our Fall 2022 graduating cohort in the MA English Program: Ilana Baer, Shane Downing, Padma Ledik, Maya Patterson-Burch, and Yasmin Webster-Woog! These students completed much of their studies online, wrapping up their studies with a triumphant return to in-person presentations of their Capstone Projects at the December 2nd Conference. Their Capstone Projects addressed diverse contexts: English pronunciation instruction in Japan, non-credit and college level ESL in the US, and embedded tutoring support for university writing skills. Students explored ways to promote participation in online language classes, support Japanese learners of English to achieve greater proficiency, provide inclusive classes that welcome LGBTQ+ identities, and address the needs of immigrant parents too often marginalized in their interactions with their children’s schools. We wish our grads much success as they embark on new chapters in their careers!

Our undergraduate journal is open for submissions, and now is the time to encourage your fall 2022 students to submit their writing and artwork. Help us celebrate and populate this awesome home-grown publication: it's a wonderful way for students to feel validated and proud of their work and to share what they've learned with families and friends! And a one-to-one invitation from a teacher can help encourage students that they should submit!
This year's theme is "UNMASKING," revelations on identity and what lies beneath the mask. Please encourage your students to submit their best writing (creative or academic essays, poetry, photography or art) to sutro@sfsu.edu.
Thank you to Professor Caroline Casper and the student editors Carina Thanh-Ngoc Delorenzo, Caitlin Darke, Osvaldo N. Salazar!
ENG 655 Literature and the Adolescent Reader - Project Showcase
Dr. Jim Gilligan’s students in ENG 655 Literature and the Adolescent Reader hosted a project showcase. Students worked as school committees and created a classroom bulletin board featuring elements of a unit they would teach (grades 6-12). Each unit focused on an essential question and included 4 full-length texts and 3 supporting texts. For the bulletin board, each committee cited relevant Common Core Standards for instruction, describe sample activities and a culminating assessment for the unit, and identify student learning outcomes.
