Background
Soccer for Social Change at Pitt formed in 2020 in order to give back to underserved children, especially those living in minority and refugee communities, in the city of Pittsburgh. Through fun icebreakers, discussions on key life skills, and soccer demonstrations, we develop lifelong character-building attributes through sports-based programming.
Who We Work With
Our primary partner is Open Field, a group that specifically partners with minority and refugee organizations to teach life skills in a soccer-based setting. Our primary contacts at Open Field are CEO Justin Forzano and Youth Program Coordinator Chloe Kinnahan. You can learn more about Open Field at the video above!
The children we work with hail from a variety of backgrounds and locations and are part of such communities as the Casa San Jose organization, ARYSE, Crafton Heights, and Northview Heights.
What We Do
The majority of our volunteering involves serving as coach-mentors in the Crafton and Northview Heights neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. Our volunteering primarily consists of:
Serving as coaches in recreational soccer-league settings
Assisting in running after-school and summer camp programming
Helping youth participate in special soccer-based opportunities like travel soccer clinics and high-level soccer program tryouts
When We Volunteer
Our current long-term volunteering opportunity for the fall semester involves our partnership with Open Field and the Elliott - West End Athletic Association. Volunteers are serving as coaches for the Elliott - West End's fall season, with volunteers serving as coaches for children ages 9 - 14.
While no further availability exists for the volunteering opportunity described above, there will still be volunteering opportunities available throughout the year. Most opportunities structured around the University of Pittsburgh's fall and spring semester schedules.
Volunteering opportunities are offered on both weekdays and weekends. Typically, weekday sessions occur sometime between 4 and 7 P.M. to accommodate children's in-school sessions, with weekend sessions typically occurring between 10 A.M. and 1 P.M.
